The Yick Wo Institution
Who We Are
The Yick Wo Institution is a non-profit public policy organization registered in Washington, DC in 2023. The organization’s name pays tribute to the historic legal battle, Yick Wo v. Hopkins, fought by a Chinese immigrant in the era of the Chinese Exclusion Act, eventually reaching the Supreme Court. This landmark case marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of U.S. constitutional jurisprudence, ultimately leading to the establishment of the fundamental principle that discrimination based on race, religion, national origin, and alienage is in direct violation of the Fourteenth Amendment.
Dedicated to tackling the repercussions of ill-informed, potentially discriminatory policies, we focus on public policy research, communication, and dissemination. Our organization brings together a diverse group of scholars, communication and media specialists, and community activists. Through thoughtful and inclusive dialogue, we aim to shed light on pressing issues directly impacting minority groups. Leveraging the power of our media platforms, we are committed to informing the public, amplifying the voices of underrepresented groups, and advocating for equal rights and opportunities for all.
Embracing the rich, enduring legacy of Yick Wo, our mission is to contribute to social justice and foster a society where individuals are treated with dignity, respect, and fairness. We stand united in pursuit of a more just and equitable future for all members of our diverse society.
